What We Do
Responsible, Sustainable, Efficient Farming
The Homer Farming team has a wide-ranging skill set, with the knowledge, experience and equipment to manage both dairy and arable farms.
We farm under various arrangements, such as tenancies, share farming and management agreements.
Dairy
We have 850 cows in three herds, block calving, two Autumn and one Spring. The herds are mainly cross bred, choosing only the best suited genetics for our pasture based system, using British, New Zealand and Irish sires.
Our aim is to keep things as simple as possible; all three dairy farms have 24×48 Waikato Swing-over parlours, ACRs and cluster flush, with consistent standard operation procedures and protocols.
They are fed on a pasture based diet year round, rotationally grazed for an average of nine months per year and fed grass and whole crop silage during the Winter.
For the winter there are plenty of cubicle beds for the cows, bedding them on chopped straw, utilising the loose yards for transition and calving cows. Our young stock are housed for as little time as possible in cow kennels, which are great for cubicle training when they join the herd.
The three herds produce a total of 4.5 million litres annually, converting grass to milk, in a way that is healthiest and simplest for the cows and environment, making it easier and more enjoyable for the team.
Since 2012 we have invested heavily into improving the infrastructure, such as; new milking parlours, cubicles, cow tracks, young stock shed, upgrading dirty water lagoons and installing slurry separators.
We are always looking for techniques and innovation to improve the way we look after our cows and the team to ensure efficient and sustainable milk production.
Cropping
We farm approximately 2600 acres, crops including: grassland, wheat, barley, oats, oil seed rape and maize.
The establishment techniques include minimum tillage or low disturbance drilling, with modern machinery using GPS technology for accurate operations and variable rate applications. These techniques help to improve soil health, leading to optimum crop production.
Contracting
Our range of machinery allows us to provide various contracting services, including:
